Atrial Fibrillation Study Group: An integrated series of studies to prevent stroke

Summary

An EHR-data-driven study to create an effective and comprehensive program that will identify atrial fibrillation early and prevent its complications in the general population.

Context and Aims

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disturbance that potentiates the creation of clots in the heart. These clots, when dislodged, are a significant cause of stroke. AF is frequently asymptomatic and only manifests with the occurrence of a stroke. It has been shown that the presentation of heart conditions and associated risk factors may differ between men and women. Our aim is to detect risk factors for the early identification of individuals at higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation. With early detection, these at-risk patients can be proactively monitored and treated to prevent strokes.

Research Approach

Our initial project mapped the prevalence and incidence of individuals with abnormal cardiac rhythms, characterized these patients and projected the numbers of new cases.

A personalized predictive model is being developed so that a decision support tool can be implemented in clinical practice. The algorithm will be tested and validated in our population.

Key Findings and/or Potential Impact

A personalized risk model implemented in clinics will enable earlier identification of patients at risk for AF, with the goal to prevent a significant number of strokes before they occur.
